Mozambique occupies the southeast corner of Africa, fronting the Indian Ocean for over 2,000 kilometers. The Zambezi River divides the country roughly in two. North of the river, miombo woodlands and inselbergs run toward Lake Malawi and the Niassa region; south of the river lie broader lowlands, coastal plains and the Lebombo and Mashonaland highlands toward South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Hunts follow traditional safari style. Game is often tracked on fresh spoor with skilled trackers, or spotted from a distance until a mature animal is found, then a stalk commences. In the Zambezi floodplains and sand forests, hunters often glass from edges and walk into cover for buffalo and sable, while in Niassa’s miombo and granite country, long foot hunts and patient riverine stalks are the norm. Night hunting with lights is permitted for certain species such as leopard, lion, bushpig and crocodile, subject to area regulations and permits. Waterfowl and upland birds are taken over natural water, crop edges and grasslands during the migratory and post-rains periods.
