Grysbuck are divided into two subspecies. Sharpe’s Grysbuck being the slightly smaller of the two is also known as the Northern Grysbuck and can be hunted in Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the northern parts of South Africa. The Southern Grysbuck, more commonly known as the Cape Grysbuck is endemic to the Fynbos biome of the Western and Eastern Provinces of South Africa.

In Tanzania, a Sharpe’s Grysbuck may be hunted on a 16 or 21 day license. Daily Rates for these safaris range from $1,650 – 1,950 per day with a trophy fee between $ 450-600. In Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique you will be required to book a minimum of a 6-10 day hunt, with a daily rate of $600-$700 and pay a trophy fee of $940 in Zambia, $300-500 in Zimbabwe and $1,000-1,600 in Mozambique. The same hunt is available in the north eastern Limpopo Province of South Africa, with trophy fees for a Sharpe’s Grysbuck ranging from $1,800-2,000 and daily rates between $350-450 per day. Trophy fees for the more common Cape Grysbuck range from $850-1,950.

When to hunt Grysbuck?
Grysbuck may be hunted year round In South Africa and Zimbabwe. In Mozambique the season is open from April 1 to November 30. The Zambian hunting season runs from the beginning of May to the end of November. In Tanzania the season is from July to December. The best months for hunting Grysbuck are the dry months of August to October when the vegetation is sparser, the grass is short and visibility at its best.

Being primarily a nocturnal animal, the best hunting time is dawn and dusk when taking to or emerging from cover to feed. The Sharpe’s Grysbuck is generally found in the hills where it is easiest to hunt when trying to clamber away over the uneven terrain and giving away its position. It is generally hunted as a trophy of opportunity but avid collectors may even dedicate a full on hunt to collect this member of the ‘Tiny Ten’. The Cape Grysbuck is much more difficult to hunt. A walk and stalk in their fynbos habitat along roads, near rivers and old agriculture fields may be your best bet to collect one of the specimens.
Why hunt Grysbuck?
This animal's name is directly translated from the Afrikaans word Grysbok means “Grey Buck”. This description is derived from the grey/white hairs scattered across its body covered with coarse hair which differentiates it from a Steenbuck. A devoted hunter wanting to shoot a Grysbuck will have to apply all their skills to shoot one of these crafty animals. Best mounted as a full mount with some habitat or a pedestal mount with other members of the ‘Tiny Ten’.
