Elephant hunting in Cameroon

Two species of Elephant are found in Cameroon, the Savanna Elephant and the Forest Elephant. In the northern parts of the country, you find the West African Bush, African Plains, Abyssinian or Sudan Elephant. As the name would imply, this Elephant occurs in the savannahs. These Elephants are much larger than their close forest cousins. Forest Elephants are found in the African equatorial rainforests. Apart from being smaller than their savannah cousins, they have rounded heads and straight tusks that are thinner and lighter than the Savannah Elephant tusks. These tusks are also stained brown in colour caused by the sap and juices from the trees they eat. Forest Elephants also have five toenails on the front feet and four on the back feet as opposed to the Savannah Elephants that have one toenail less on each respective foot. Both subspecies of Elephants are listed as CITES 1 by the IUCN.
