About hunting in Tennessee

Tennessee’s hunting history and heritage goes back to the days of the Longhunters in the 1760s and 1770s, when hunters and explorers such as Daniel Boone and Richard Callaway made “long hunts” into the state from southwestern Virginia, blazing trails through the high, rugged mountains of East Tennessee and opening up the state to European settlement. Today, Tennessee is still a hunter’s paradise. Habitats vary widely, with the Appalachian Mountains dominating the eastern part of the state and the rolling hills and bottomland along the Mississippi River forming the western border. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and black bears are abundant. Upland birds, ducks and geese, and small game are also found in Tennessee, and traditional nighttime raccoon hunting with dogs is a popular pastime. Black bears are also hunted with dogs in designated areas. Hunting opportunities are available for wild hogs in some areas in conjunction with other big-game seasons. The range of white-tailed deer in Tennessee includes all 95 counties in the state; statewide, the deer herd numbers approximately 900,000 animals. Growth of the Tennessee deer herd is expected to continue, with most expansion occurring in the Mississippi River counties and in eastern Tennessee, which has traditionally been the slowest area of the state for deer population growth. The deer herd in middle and west Tennessee is so robust in some areas that management efforts are focused at slowing or stabilizing herd growth. Tennessee even has a limited-quota elk season. Elk were reintroduced to the state in the late 1990s, and the elk herd currently numbers a little over 400. In 2009, Tennessee held its first elk hunt in 150 years. In 2017, 15 draw permits for elk were issued. Hunters must wear on the upper portion of their body and head a minimum of 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange (blaze orange), visible front and back, while hunting big game, except on archery-only and turkey hunts. I enjoyed the fact that my wife was able to sit with me on this hunt. The family that operates the lodge are very friendly and helpful. The food provided was delicious and the accommodations were cozy.

The weather wasn’t great while we were there. But the outfitter has no control over that aspect.

At Windsor Woods I was able to kill my first buck, a nice & point, on opening day of gun season, after only being in the stand 40 minutes

This was advertised as semi-guided, and the guides were very knowledgeable, but they never suggested spots to hunt based on where they have been seeing deer, and never offered to show their recent game pictures. In the future, I would like to see the guides be more pro-active with informing hunters about where they have seen deer, and offer evidence. This boosts the confidence of the Hunter, and makes for a better overall experience.

I liked leaving the farm!

Everything about this trip was horrible! No turkeys to be found, over hunted and too many hunters on a small piece of land, terrible living arrangements, no food like it stated, guide was a moron which never showed up the first morning, we were threatened by the owner saying if we gave a bad review he would sue us we were only allowed to write good reviews, he put a curfew on us and said we had to be in bed by dark, he was racist, I could go on and on about how horrible this experience was but it brings back bad memories talking about it so let me just say I paid for four days of hunting and I left without my money on the second day never even finished my hunt. Was the most horrible experience of my life and I’m ashamed of you guys for having that on the booking site!!!

Owner John Henry and guides Jesse and Bug were very friendly, accommodating and most importantly, knew what they were doing. The lodge was clean and beds comfortable. John Henry served up some very tasty, homemade, deer camp comfort food that had everyone going back for seconds. This is real hunting experience, enjoying the outdoors and the camaraderie of other hunters. I feel that I met new friends and I'm planning my visit for next year. Guys thanks for everything. Oh, there were deer taken also. Great experience! Thank you John Henry.
