The “Bluegrass State,” part of the upland south and the Appalachian region, may be best known for horse racing and bourbon, but it also offers some of the best hunting in the region. Here in the land of Daniel Boone, hunters can roam beautiful forests, rolling open fields, and spectacular mountains in search of deer, bear, elk, and turkeys. Kentucky boasts the largest elk herd east of the Mississippi River. Elk were reintroduced in the southern part of the state in the 1990s after an absence of 150 years, and the herd is thriving. More than 500 elk were taken by hunters last year. White-tailed deer populations are at all-time highs, with nearly a million deer roaming the state, and Kentucky produces enough trophy bucks to stay consistently in the top five rankings of the Boone and Crockett Club listings. In addition, black bear hunting opportunities are expanding as more bruins colonize the state from the southeast. Kentucky is home to a variety of smaller game, including squirrels, rabbits, quail, and grouse. Migratory bird hunting opportunities include doves, ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, and more. Wild turkeys, restocked in the state in the 1950s, are flourishing in numbers that allow them to be hunted throughout the state. Hunters in Kentucky must carry a valid hunter education card while hunting in addition to their license and applicable species permit. Hunter orange must be worn on the head, chest, and back when hunting during the rifle and muzzleloader seasons. The stand locations were great with plenty of viewing angles and lots of wildlife activity. Was able to see it all had the chance on a pig the first night at the feeder but didn’t connect had 5 the second night but didn’t come into a comfortable range. Good hunting!

Little piggy didn’t come home.

In 3 days I saw no deer or had any deer come to the 4 trail cameras and bait that I had out. The accommodations are a 15x20 shed with a portable propane tank heater, a toilet chair with a broken post hole cutter for a bathroom and a Coleman camp stove. Livable, but not what I expected.

This was the best hunting experiences I've had and I went all by myself on top of it. Owner: James, was completely polite and useful and helped me out with butchers and taxidermists. And it came in useful after my shooting a 192 ¹⁰/¹⁶" antler buck! I've been hunting for a dozen years and this by sure was my number 1 life experience. Not just the deer and other animal sightings alone, but just the home feeling vibes and the excitement while my driving there, and this is coming from me a guy all the way from New York.

I'm not a big fan of the old school cabin in the hunt property, but I'm new fashioned. Besides there's a hotel about 30 minutes nearby.
