Vervet Monkeys occur in East Africa and all the way down to the eastern seaboard of Southern Africa. Their range extends over open woodlands, coastal forests, other forest fringes and riverine habitats. They may be cute but are a real nuisance for crop producing farmers and raiding homes in urban built up areas. They can be hunted in Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana and South Africa.

On private land and in many hunting camps these animals are often classified as vermin and may be hunted for free. However, they need to be field prepared for export so some do charge a trophy fee. If hunted during the course of a normal plains game hunt in South Africa, the daily rate is approximately $350-$450 per day. The trophy fee range is from $50-150. In Zimbabwe and Zambia you will be required to book a minimum of a 7-10 day hunt, with a daily rate of $600-$800 and pay a trophy fee of approximately $25-75 in Zimbabwe up to $275 in Mozambique. In Tanzania and further north you may need to ask your Outfitter for a price as Vervet Monkeys do not appear on their price lists.

When to hunt Vervet Monkey?
Vervet Monkeys may be hunted year round in South Africa and Zimbabwe. In Mozambique, Monkeys may only be hunted during the hunting season which opens on April 1 and closes on November 30. Likewise, in Zambia and Tanzania, Monkeys are shot during the hunting season which is from July to December in Tanzania and in Zambia’s case, the season is from May to the end of November.

In general, Monkeys can be hunted any time of the day and normally when the opportunity arises. In the wild they are often found sunning themselves at the end of a branch on a chilly winter’s morning. During the heat of the day they are often encountered near water. Many a Monkey has been shot in camp where they can become real pests stealing food from the kitchen or client’s rooms. Normally a spot and stalk hunt works well. To hunt crop raiding Monkeys that are shot on a regular basis may take a great deal of patience. Bowhunters should make use of blinds overlooking a waterhole to take a trophy.
Why hunt Vervet Monkey?
Vervet Monkeys are often shot with some encouragement from a Professional Hunter wanting to rid his camp of a problem animal or when a farmer asks you for help to deter the remaining troops of Monkeys from raiding their crops. A crop raiding Monkey hunt can be extremely challenging as these animals disperse like greased lightning at any sign of danger. They make magnificent full mount trophies.
