Steenbok is the largest antelope in the group known to hunters as the “Tiny Ten”. It is commonly found in Southern and East Africa where protected from marauding dogs. This species is found on open plains and cattle farms with a preference for drier unstable or transitional habitats. These animals are found in the following countries where it may be hunted: Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

A species normally targeted by clients keen on collecting the small antelope during a dedicated hunt to shoot the smaller species or as a trophy of opportunity during your hunt. When to hunt Steenbok?
Steenbok may be hunted year round In South Africa and Zimbabwe. In Namibia, for instance, hunting is closed in January and February, and in Mozambique the season is open from April 1 to November 30. In Tanzania the hunting season is from 1 July to 31 December. The best months for hunting Steenbok are the dry autumn months of August to October or after a burn when the green grass starts to sprout. General hunting period: All year. Being a shy territorial animal, these animals prefer long grass but will wander out into the open or onto road verges to graze. They are most active in the early morning and evening and will rest up in the shade during the heat of the day. When alarmed they will lie flat in the grass with its ears pinned back to avoid detection. This behaviour comes in quite handy if you are a bow hunter who can pinpoint the spot where the Steenbok is concealing itself and sneak in very quietly to take a shot. They will flush at the last minute, taking off a great speed. Sometimes they are known to stop and look back which will give you an opportunity to take a shot. Often hunted as a chance encounter
Why hunt Steenbok?
Steenbok, like most small antelope have super refined senses with great camouflage making for a most challenging hunt. The “Tiny Ten” also known as the Pygmy Antelope may not the most fearsome but will really test a hunter’s patience, perseverance and hunting skills. Hunting Steenbok may be one of the easier species in this class. However, once you have specially hunted one or two of these tiny antelope by choice, you will be totally hooked and try to get the rest. They make wonderful full mounts or great pedestal mounts when combined with some of the other small species of similar size. Best of all, they take up very little space in your trophy room.
