Also known as a Laughing Hyena due to the human-like laughter sounds it makes when excited. Found across sub-Saharan Africa excluding the jungles of Western and Central Africa and the really dry Namib Desert regions of Namibia. This savanna species can be hunted in the Cameroon, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia. Hyena numbers are declining outside of protected areas and hunting territories due to habitat loss and poaching.

In Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique you will be required to book a minimum of a 7-10 day hunt, with a daily rate of $600-$700 and pay a trophy fee of approximately $450-750 in Zimbabwe. Trophy fees for Hyena in Mozambique cost $1,400-2,400 and in Zambia you will pay approximately $1,225. While in Tanzania, a minimum 10 day hunt will cost approximately $1,200-1,700 per day and trophy fees of $700-$1,300. In Namibia and South Africa, the daily rates range from $350-$450 per day with a trophy fee of $1,850-5,000. A 5 day stand-alone or package hunt will cost just over $5,000 in South Africa.

When to hunt Spotted Hyena?
Hyena may be hunted year round In South Africa and Zimbabwe. In Mozambique the season is open from April 1 to November 30. The Zambian hunting season runs from the beginning of May to the end of November. In Tanzania the hunting season is from 1 July to 31 December. The Namibian hunting season is from February 1 to November 30. The best months to hunt Hyenas are the cooler winter months especially if you are baiting as the baits last longer before going really rancid even though hyenas are not averse to eating really rotten meat.

The traditional way to hunt a Hyena is using a baiting process similar to that used during a Leopard hunt. However, in this instance the bait will be hung much lower to the ground but high enough so the Hyena cannot get a good grip on the carcass. Baiting normally commences prior to the client’s arrival. Data recorded by a trail camera will give an indication of the size of the animal feeding on the bait and most important of all the time that the animal is feeding. Once the bait is active, a blind is built and you need to be ready and waiting from the late afternoon for the animals return.

Why hunt Spotted Hyena?
Several myths and mysteries surrounding these animals and their behaviour automatically creates a feeling of intrigue. Their spine chilling hysterical laughter brings back that ancestral fear that man has of these potentially dangerous animals when on the prowl at night. They have been known to attack sleeping people, scaring them for life. Having powerful bone crunching jaws, their skulls make an awesome display. In real life, they are smelly, flea ridden animals but they make splendid full mount trophies especially if depicted in a hunting habitat scene with a lion as the main character.
