Bongo hunting in Cameroon

Bongo is one of Africa’s ultimate trophy animals. This rainforest, heavy-set antelope was once referred to as a “Broad Horned Antelope”. Two subspecies occur, the Eastern, Mountain or Kenyan Bongo and the Western or Lowland Bongo that is most commonly hunted in the forested areas of Cameroon. A Bongo’s colouring is very similar to that of a female Nyala. However, these animals are much bigger and thickset with a uniform chestnut colour. The Bongo (Western or Lowland) hunted in Cameroon is slightly smaller in stature with smaller horns than the Eastern variety. The Eastern (Kenyan) Bongo only occurs on Mount Meru in Kenya and cannot be hunted. Bongo hunting in Cameroon is rated very highly. Some outfitters use Pygmy trackers and dogs to flush these animals which are then shot at close range on the run whilst dashing through the jungle. They are also hunted from machan, a raised platform overlooking an open glade or natural salt lick in the forest. Bongo is classified as near threatened by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required other than a valid trophy fee license.
