Bates's Pygmy Antelope hunting in Cameroon

Bate’s Pygmy Antelope is also known as the Dwarf Antelope, Pygmy Antelope or Bates' Dwarf Antelope. These fully-grown antelope weigh as little as 2 to 3kg (4.4 – 6.6 lbs) making them the second-smallest antelope in the world. They have shiny dark chestnut coats with lighter brown flanks, white throat and belly. The males are territorial and have short stout horns, ringed at the base. Bate’s Pygmy Antelope can be hunted in the dense high forested areas of Cameroon. Hunting Bate’s Pygmy Antelope can be time-consuming, lying in wait over a freshly used dung midden. Crawling around in the muddy forests can be quite tiresome. The alternative is to try calling or walking in search of these dainty animals feeding along the logging road verges. Although not endangered they are negatively affected by habitat loss and are regularly hunted for bushmeat. Bate’s Pygmy Antelope are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required. A prearranged hunting licence must be purchased before the hunt begins.
