Fourteen days with Anton

Antonie Esterhuizen of Estreux Safaris offered a deal a while ago that seemed made for me. We hunted in the Grootfontein area as years of prolonged drought had made the proposed hunt in Kaokaland unfeasible. You can read plenty of reviews of hunting from other posters, the sentiments of whom I share, so I won't spend much time reviewing the hunt itself; instead, I want to review my non-hunting week, because it will give a pretty clear picture of Anton and Estreux.
The second week of my time with Anton was truly something special. After hunting for seven days, he took me on a trip through northwest Namibia. It was apparent from the reviews of Estreux Safaris that Anton is a very knowledgeable man, and this was so evident on the trip. I cannot believe that anyone in Namibia knows his country as well as he does. His encyclopedic knowledge of the flora, fauna, geology, and history of Namibia are formidable, and at every turn we encountered people who know him from his many services to Namibia. His trip included an eclectic variety of places and experiences; every day and night brought a different experience: Etosha Heights, Etosha, Camp Aussicht, a mountain-top villa of his Himba expert and mining friend, Marius, Sesfontein, Ongongo waterfall, the Himba sacred mountain, Khowarib Lodge, the Skeleton Coast, Swakopmund, and a trip to Joe's in Windhoek on the evening before my departure. This is by no means the complete list. His attention to detail and desire to satisfy his clients can be illustrated with two brief examples: one night, he had me seated in such a way as to afford me the impressive spectacle of the full moon rising from behind a mountain just as supper was served; on another, he presided over the arrival and feeding of four porcupines who then provided hours of entertainment as we spent the evening with his mountain-dwelling friends. I had once mentioned that it would be nice to see a porcupine.
I have had numerous trips to Africa and have hunted in four countries. I have been fortunate that every trip has been very good to exceptional. Anton stands at the top of the list. I will certainly return, but will be sure to take more time. There are so many places to hunt and visit in Namibia, and Anton is the guy I will want to guide me in further exploration of that wonderful country. Give him a try. Anton will put you on to excellent animals, and teach you so much that will your time will be very fulfilling.

A real hunt

This is a real hunt. You will work hard for your animals. Truly a wild place. Outfitter will take excellent care of you. His care of trophy’s after they are taken is best I have ever seen. Anton is a world class PH and it was a pleasure to hunt with him.
Through no fault of anyone’s grass was unusually tall due to a lot of rain that they never get. Which makes things difficult when you are trying to find a 2 foot Dik Dik in three feet of grass. But we never stopped and I got a very nice one.

I found Anton, the outfitter and PH to be extremely professional and trustworthy. I always got a straight answer and no BS. His concessions are abundant in game which travel freely across the low fence areas. The accommodations and food were very good and I was always made to feel at home.
Anton went the extra mile on several occasions including finding additional ammo in and uncommon caliber when I was running low. And I have to brag on his resilience after he had a serious injury during the hunt. The injury was bad enough that most guys including myself would have called it quits but he continued to hunt until I had my trophy and was back on the plane.
I wish I had spent two more weeks with Anton to explore more of Namibia :)
But there will be another trip

I found the booking process to be smooth and professional, with quick responses to email queries.
My guide, Anton, was a true pro, with close attention to detail and huge energy.
He is clearly a true naturalist and knows all the animals, birds and trees.
Importantly, he also made a point of getting on well with everyone we met, from land owners to farm workers.
The location was working cattle ranches, with good game populations - the ranches were low fenced, so game could roam freely.
We saw animals jumping over the fences several times, so I was reassured that it was a fair chase hunt.
There were NO downsides from hunting point of view.
However, I am not sure whether Namibia is a great place to take non-hunters.
Before booking a combined trip for hunters and non-hunters, I suggest checking that there will be enough to do locally to keep everyone entertained.

Dream of a lifetime.

I wanted free range no fence hunt in a true wilderness for kudu, gemsbok, and Hartman zebra. I am in my sixties and am crippled with a Neuromuscular disease. I told Anton about my condition and say I was not afraid of failing but could place no value on any trophy be hind a fence. He understood and guided me to a ancient kudu, an enormous Mountain zebra, 2 gemsbok one of which was Roland & Wards, 2 Rowland&Wards springbok. We took a gemsbok and 4 springbok for the local himba as well. You won't go wrong with Anton.
We had planned to search out dessert adapted lions and elephants to photograph after the hunt. Anton told me he would be taking my money for nothing as the drought had pushed the animals out of the range of my limited mobility. We went to Ethosha instead and created a fantastic photographic portfolio.

The Consummate Guide

Who better to tour the vast Kaokoland eco region than with the man who was directly responsible for setting up the various concessions for the Namibian government in the first place? From the Kunene river to the Hoanib river and everywhere in between, Anton had vast knowledge of the ecosystem, the indigenous people, and of course, the animals. Fantastic trophies are to be found in a once in a lifetime destination!
I wish I could have stayed longer than the 18 days I was there!
