About hunting in Louisiana

The wildlife-rich deltas, marshes, bayous, savannas, and longleaf pine forests of Louisiana are great places to hunt waterfowl, white-tailed deer, turkeys, alligators, and upland birds such as quail and woodcock. Ducks and geese migrating down the Mississippi Flyway make Louisiana a waterfowler’s paradise; the Duck Capital of America, Gueydan, is located here, and the state is the home of Duck Commander and the blockbuster reality show Duck Dynasty. The state has many fine hunting lodges that cater not just to waterfowlers but also to deer hunters. While the state is not known for producing big bucks, Louisiana is one of the top three states in the nation for older bucks, and these mature deer are abundant and present a challenging and rewarding hunt. The bottomland along the Mississippi River holds the largest numbers of whitetails and has abundant agricultural areas that produce deer with larger body sizes and antlers. Louisiana’s plentiful alligators may be harvested by hook and line, bow and arrow, and firearms (except shotguns). The hook and line method is the most common. The state also offers year-round hunting for species it calls Outlaw Quadrupeds—armadillos, coyotes, and feral hogs. Holders of a valid Louisiana hunting license may take these species any time of the year. Learn more about hunting in Louisiana at http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting.
