About hunting in Asia

Hunting in Asia is a grand adventure. The world’s largest continent, it holds more varieties of large animals than any other continent on Earth. Asia is a paradise for the mountain hunter, with the largest variety of wild sheep and goats found anywhere in the world. Asia also offers opportunities to hunt bears, gazelles, roe deer, stags, and other antlered game. The continent not only offers great hunting but also fantastic travel opportunities, with the chance to experience different cultures. In addition to wild country and lots of game, you will see mosques, temples, historic ruins, and ancient cities and towns. Some of the most sought-after species in Asia include the many species of ibex, from the bezoar ibex of Turkey to the mid-Asian ibex of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to the Altai ibex of Mongolia. Asia is home to the world’s largest wild sheep, the argali. Best known is the Marco Polo argali, hunted in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, but the Altai and Gobi argali of Mongolia are also impressive, sought-after sheep. The tur of the Caucasus Mountains are said to be among the most difficult animals in the world to hunt because of the steep terrain where they live. Huge red stags and large roe deer are found in many parts of Asia, as are massive brown bears. Travel in Asia can be challenging because of the large distances to be covered, so some patience and flexibility in your plans is helpful. In many cases there is also a language barrier, as English is not widely spoken in much of Asia. Most outfitters will provide an interpreter in camp, but it’s likely your guide will not speak English. Depending on the region and species to be hunted, the terrain can be very difficult, as Asia holds the world’s highest and most rugged mountain ranges. Asia is not an easy place to hunt, but it holds great rewards for the adventurous hunter.

A great hunting trip to Tajikistan

The whole trip was fantastic. Exactly the adventure I was looking for. I was picked up from the airport and driven (about 8h on mixed roads) to the West Central area of Tajikistan right into the shadow of Peak Ismoil Somoni. After arrival we overnighted in a small village and ate delicious local food. The next morning, we hiked out to the hunting camp, which consisted of two large wall tents and rugged amenities. The food and the company in camp was both great and the guides (huntsman) appeared knowledgeable and friendly despite the language barrier. (An interpreter was always present to help with communications). The next morning, we headed out to find the Ibex; after a rather challenging 3h hike up in a creek bed and after seeing a brown bear sow with two second year cubs, we reached the headwall of a high basin at about 12000 feet and spotted about 50-60 Ibex bedded on a glacier. We were able to climb above them and successfully harvest a 12-year-old billy with 122 cm horns. I could not be happier. The next day we hiked back to camp, and the day after drove back to Dushanbe. All in all, a trip of a lifetime. I would love to do it again.

Nothing really, the whole experience was great. Maybe the only thing that would have been nice was to know in advance how many guides (huntsman) and other personnel was in camp to be able to tip them adequately. But again, I could have also taken a bit more money with me right of the bat.

Hunting was challenging with a lot of glassing. Be prepared for long shots, 350+ yards. It was a great cultural experience to interact with the guides and villagers. Also, we ate at many different local restaurants which was an added bonus to sample a variety of foods. We were treated like family. We had help getting the rifles through customs and police stations at all the airports, which is definitely needed.

Ahmet, the outfitter, speaks good English and is very organized. He is with you almost all of the time. The local guides are excellent spotters and hikers, but do not speak English well. At times, there were communication problems. Some of this is my issue as I don’t speak any Turkish.

Очень понравилась охота и как все организовано. Вся команда организаторов старалась как могла с момента прилета и обратно. Особенно молодцы проводники, которые старалсь найти, подсказать и добыть что-то реально, что называется, oversized...)) Что в итоге и получилось во многом благодаря их стараниям и упорству. Охота очень-очень ходовая. Дневные переходы 10-15 км, в том числе до 1000м подьемы. К этому надо быть готовым физически и морально. Треккинг очень схож с нашим Кавказом кто бывал, только масштабы побольше))

Ничего стоящего упоминания не было. Мелкие ньюансы - не в счет...
