Sierra Nevada is a mountain massif in Spain belonging to the group of the Betic mountain ranges, specifically to the Penibetic system. It is located between the provinces of Granada and Almería. It is the highest mountain massif in all of Western Europe, after the Alps. The relief of the Sierra Nevada has soft shapes and hilly peaks, although in localized sectors of the massif they can become abrupt and steep. Its relief also has extraordinary geomorphological interest due to the existing forms of glacial and periglacial modeling and the still active periglacial dynamics that continue to act from 2500-2600 m above sea level. The entire summit area shows traces of glacial erosion, with U-shaped valleys, cirques crowned by abrupt mountain ranges and lagoons that occupy the depressions.
