Where to hunt Coati
Coati, or Coatimundi, is an omnivorous mammal not unlike a Racoon. It has a long snout, and a longer tail, and it may feed on both fruit and nuts and on a variety of smaller animals, birds, and insects. It enjoys a wide distribution in Central, South, and North America, where its range stretches in the southern parts of the USA. You may hunt a Coati with an outfitter specializing in predator hunts in the US, or as a part of a hunting expedition to the Yucatan.
Predator hunts in the USA may cost as low as $300 a hunter a day, inclusive of shooting fees. A hunt in the Yucatan is a big-time expedition, that is priced just under $5,000 for a 7-day adventure. Shooting fees come on top of that, with the shooting fee for a Coati being on the order of $400.
When to hunt Coati?
Predator hunts in the USA can happen all year round. In the Yucatan, hunting is mostly limited to the dry season. Bird hunters prefer the spring (March till May), and big-game hunters the fall (September-November), but for Coati hunting it makes no difference.
Coatis are diurnal, and mostly active in the morning and in the afternoon. The prime method for a focused Coati hunt is calling. Predator hunting in the American Southwest prefer electronic predator calls imitating sounds of prey. Small predators tend to approach potential prey with all senses on the alert, so a hunter must learn to be extra silent and motionless during the hunt. A coati may also be hunted non-specifically, if an opportunity arises in the course of a hunt for another species.
Why hunt Coati?
The main motivation for a predator hunter is usually the need to control predators' numbers. The locals pursue Coatis also for their fur, and the quite edible meat. And if we're talking about a hunting expedition to the Yucatan, it is one of the rare opportunities in the modern world to walk in the shoes of the brave explorers of old, and bring back a few trophies as material reminders of the adventure.
