About this hunt

The most exciting fall black bear hunting is done during the months of September and October when there usually is a profusion of wild berries, and when caribou are moving from their summer to wintering areas. Black bears are a very effective predator on both adult and juvenile caribou. They will linger along well travelled caribou migration routes where there are clumps of stunted evergreen trees in which to conceal their presence. Hunting them during these times involves finding high ground from which to survey an area with binocular or spotting scope. This black bear hunt has proven to be much more than a hunt – it’s an education on how the mechanics of nature are applied "in the raw". You’ll bear witness to the techniques these specialists have developed and perfected in maximizing their predatory effectiveness. Outside of this black bear hunt, very few hunters have been fortunate enough to have a front row seat from which to view the full story on black bear predation on woodland caribou calves, & sometimes adults. Their activities attract bald eagles, coyotes, foxes, and lynx. Only the coyote can be harvested as a byproduct of the black bear hunting, and we encourage you to do so at every opportunity. A study conducted by the Newfoundland Wildlife Division revealed the male black bear in our area is 37% larger, and female is 55% larger on average then their cousins in New Brunswick, Quebec, Maine, and Alaska. You won’t be hunting with a busload of hunters. You will be in remote wilderness, where we manage the hunting to ensure that hunters consistently have opportunities to take bear in the 300 to 700 lbs. class. So, bring your heavyweight bows and rifles. This is Black Bear hunting at its best.

Navigation guidelines

Newfoundland is located on the east coast of Canada and is served by auto ferry and by air. To drive to Newfoundland, follow the Trans -Canada Highway from the eastern provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. At North Sydney, Nova Scotia, modern auto ferries operated by Marine Atlantic will take you to Port aux Basque, Newfoundland. Follow the Trans-Canada Highway all the way to our float-plane service base at Thorburn Lake.
